What this department covers
General medicine, also called internal medicine, is the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of illness in adults. It is usually the first department a patient sees when the problem is not obvious, and the department that coordinates care when several organs are involved.

What a consultation involves
The physician takes a history, examines the patient, and orders tests where they will change the decision. Common ones are blood counts, blood sugar, thyroid and kidney function, urine tests, chest X-ray and ultrasound. Where a specialist is needed, the physician refers within the hospital.
When to see a physician
Fever lasting more than a few days, unexplained weight change, persistent tiredness, a cough that will not settle, or any long-term condition that needs review. General medicine is also the right starting point when the symptoms do not clearly belong to one organ.
