Procedures performed
Joint replacement removes a damaged joint surface and replaces it with an artificial one. Knee and hip are the usual sites. Fracture fixation holds broken bone in position while it heals, using a cast, or plates and screws, or an external frame, depending on the break. Arthroscopy uses a camera through small cuts to repair ligaments and cartilage inside a joint.
What to expect after joint replacement
Recovery is measured in weeks, not days, and depends heavily on doing the prescribed exercises. Ask before surgery what movement is allowed, when weight can be put through the joint, and where rehabilitation will be arranged, since physiotherapy here is on referral rather than in-house.
