Urology

OPD timings for this department are being confirmed.

This page is written from hospital records and is awaiting review by a doctor at the hospital.

What this department covers

Urology treats the urinary tract in everyone, and the male reproductive organs. That includes the kidneys where urine is made, the ureters, the bladder, the urethra, and in men the prostate and testes.

Conditions seen here

  • Stones in the kidney, ureter or bladder
  • Difficulty passing urine, and an enlarged prostate
  • Blood in the urine
  • Repeated urinary infections
  • Urinary leakage
  • Narrowing of the urethra

Procedures performed

Lithotripsy breaks a stone into pieces small enough to pass, using shock waves rather than an incision. Endoscopic procedures reach the bladder and ureter through the urethra, with no external cut. Open or keyhole surgery is used where the problem cannot be reached that way.

When to see a urologist

Blood in the urine, at any age and even once. Pain in the flank that comes in waves. A weak or interrupted stream, needing to pass urine often, or getting up repeatedly at night. Being unable to pass urine at all is an emergency.
